What We Belong To

What We Belong To honors the legacy of the late Anne Lubbers, Centre College Professor of Biology. She always inspired students to remain curious and connected to the natural world. The mural serves as a vibrant reminder to pause, observe, and appreciate the wonders of our planet.

Work Overview

The mural was designed by students Carly Bishop ’24, Jorge Garcia Gomez ’27, Keni Maithya ’27, and Simonne Peterson ’24. It was brought to life by artist Brandon Long. With guidance from Associate Professor of Art History Peter Haffner and support from the Centre community, the mural captures Dr. Lubbers’ profound appreciation for life’s intricacies. The work encourages viewers to stay grounded in the world around them.

"No matter what you encounter in the years to come, do not forget to look above at the sky and marvel at the clouds and the stars. Shift your gaze downward and discover the tiny organisms making a living in ways you had never imagined. Look about and note the individuality of every tree — the architecture of its branches, texture of its bark, venation of its leaves. All these things may be oblivious of us, but we do not need to be oblivious of them. This is what we belong to, and what grounds our sense of self." — Anne Lubbers
