Pre-Teaching

The Pre-Teaching Program at Centre not only prepares you for a rewarding career in the classroom, it arms you with greater understanding and appreciation of the complexities of teaching and learning while preparing you to pursue certification through one of our strategic university partners or an alternative process.

Overview

If you're interested in a career in education, Centre’s Pre-Teaching Program provides a strong foundation for graduate study, whether at one of our partner institutions—the University of Louisville or Vanderbilt University—for initial certification in elementary or secondary education, or at the graduate school of your choice.  At Centre, you have the opportunity to experience a challenging and immersive education in the liberal arts and sciences as well as educational internships, community-based education coursework, and study abroad offerings. This program allows you to select your course of study with your teaching ambitions in mind.

Curriculum

If you plan to pursue a career as a teacher, you may want to choose the education minor and a major that can lead directly to certification. For example, students interested in teaching high school mathematics may want to choose a mathematics major. Pre-Teaching students will also take courses in education, psychology, and instructional design. Depending on the institution where you plan to seek certification, some minor courses may count toward the partner institution’s requirements.

Experiential Learning

Students engage in hands-on learning experiences and reflection to develop skills and increase knowledge retention.

Students enrolled in the Pre-Teaching Certificate program can expect to engage in community-based education projects in the local schools, take part in education internships, and get an up-close look at international education practices while studying abroad.
