In this class, you will engage in a multi-dimensional study of how contemporary Italians make sense of their past and how the past is marketed for tourist consumption. As visitors, we will “excavate” Italy’s past as we travel through Sicily, Naples, and Rome by visiting archaeological sites and museums that interpret the past, by walking through cityscapes shaped by past urban and political configurations, and by eating cuisines that reflect deep histories, migrations, and exchanges.

A cathedral is a church that has a bishop’s seat (cathedra), making it the principal church of a diocese. These are places where communities go to seek God. But beyond that, cathedrals tell a story about world Christianity, the rise and fall of slavery, and the global empires and international conflicts that have shaped our world. Cathedrals transport us into the times of the Romans, the Vikings, Nazi attacks, and the end of Britain’s imperial power.

Climate change is the defining global challenge of our era, reshaping ecosystems, economies, and societies worldwide. It drives extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and biodiversity loss, producing systemic economic shocks that affect food security, health, migration, and markets. Economics is the study of scarcity and choice, and through this lens, we will analyze how institutions, policies, and economic incentives shape sustainable development. Brazil's residents, rainforests, and businesses stand at the the center of this global challenge.

New Zealand provides an exceptional natural laboratory for the study of volcanoes. The North Island, in particular, is one of the few places in the world where three distinct types of volcanoes—shield, caldera, and stratovolcanoes—can be explored within a few hours of travel. This 21-day field-based course immerses students in the geology, landscapes, and cultural contexts of New Zealand’s volcanic regions. Students begin in Auckland, a modern city built upon a volcanic field of more than fifty extinct and dormant cones formed by a deep mantle hotspot. The course includes climbs of several of these volcanoes and a visit to Rangitoto Island, the youngest and most pristine example of a basaltic shield volcano in the area. Further south, students investigate the Rotorua–Taupo region, home to massive caldera volcanoes that form two of New Zealand’s largest lakes. The Taupo eruption of 232 CE, one of the most violent eruptions on Earth in the past two millennia, serves as a case study for explosive volcanism and its global effects.
