Centre College has again been named one of the nation’s top-20 “Best Buy” schools in the 2023 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges—a distinction that agrees with other best-value nods from publications like Forbes, Kiplinger’s and Money.

The annual guide names 20 colleges or universities, 10 public and 10 private, among the “Best Buys” roster, distinguishing schools that offer “outstanding educational value as determined by academic quality in relation to the net cost of attendance.”

The selection coincides with Centre’s ongoing commitment to offer access to a high quality, affordable education. This emphasis on value is demonstrated by the College’s need-based aid and merit scholarship programs, regarded among the most generous offerings of any top national college.

Ninety percent of incoming first-year students receive some sort of financial aid. Considering the average cost of attendance after aid, Centre is often more affordable than a four-year public college.

Merit-based awards, such as the Lincoln Scholars and Brown Fellows programs, in addition to the first-generation focused Grissom Scholars and the new Kessler Scholars initiatives, all offer accessibility by recognizing high-achieving incoming students through premier scholarship offerings. Special-interest scholarships, like the Bonner Program and New Horizons Program, offer additional opportunities and support for students to contribute to specific areas of campus life.

Ultimately, Fiske cites the College as “certainly the best” institution of learning in Kentucky, describing it as a place where students come for a “well-rounded liberal arts education yet receive plenty of real-world preparation along the way.”

The Fiske Guide to Colleges has been published for nearly four decades by Edward Fiske, former education editor of the New York Times. The annual roundup of the nation’s best colleges and universities features school profiles and descriptions for more than 320 select schools, as well as exclusive ratings, quotes from current students, and college-selection tools.
